Mark Webber

Mark Alan Webber was born on August 27th, 1976, in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, and is definitely one of the most successful Formula One drivers around. For instance, did you know that in the year 2002, he was the first Australian to race in Formula One, since David Brabham in 1994? Also, in the 2009 German Grand Prix, he became the first Australian to win a race since Alan Jones had won, in 1981! Seems like this guy is certainly making his country proud.

Mark Webber, The Beginning

Webber started off small in Australia, and when he met with reasonable success, he decided to move to the United Kingdom in 1995, to make sure more success would come his way. And it did, although he received the most accolades when he was driving for the Mercedes-Benz sports car squad at Le Mans, in 1999. He had to pretty bad accidents during the practice and warm-up. How, you might be wondering. Well, an aerodynamic fault had caused the car to somersault off the Mulsanne Straight. This made Mercedes withdraw from the race, and this Webber got into a partnership with Paul Stoddart (another Australian), who was at that time the owner of the European Racing Formula 3000 team. Eventually, both of them went into Formula One, when the Minardi team was bought by Stoddart.

Claps of Success

In 2002, in Formula One, Mark Webber made his debut, and he scored Minardi’s first points in three years. Jaguar Racing signed him one as a lead driver, after his first season had ended. He spent two years with this team, and during that time, qualified may times on the front two rows of the grid, and left his teammates far behind in terms of performance. The 2009 German Grand Prix marked his first Formula One win, and the 2009 Chinese, Turkish and British Grands Prix followed. In fact, you would be surprised to know that this highly successful player is the director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, which is a union of sorts, of the Formula One drivers.

Other Activities

Also, Formula One is not the only thing he’s about. He plays tennis too, and he has won the annual Formula One Pro-Am tennis tournament in Barcelona three times! Also, in 2003, the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge was set up by him – this was a trek across Tasmania, which was aimed at raising funds for cancer charities. No wonder that he has so many fans all over the world – not only have his handsome, rugged looks won girls’ hearts over, but he is also a great player, and has a kind, charitable heart to match.
