The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve – the venue for the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix

Canadian F1 Grand Prix

The Canadian Grand Prix (known in French as the Grand Prix du Canada ) is an auto race held in Canada since 1961. It has been part of the Formula One World Championship since 1967. The Canadian GP was moved to Montreal in 1978, as Mosport Park was thought to be outdated and too dangerous. It was built around the site of Expo 67, and it is a mixture of street circuit and permanent road course. Downtown Montreal is only a stone’s throw away.

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is the venue for the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, and, as of 2007, a NASCAR Nationwide Series race. The circuit, at Parc Jean-Drapeau on Île Notre-Dame, a man-made island in the St. Lawrence River that is part of the city of Montreal, was named after the late Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve, father of Jacques Villeneuve.

One look at the circuit is enough to tell the story. The circuit is a fast circuit, but it is also something like a street circuit. The roads were designed for automobile racing, but are public roads for the rest of the year. As such, barriers run close to the circuit and many experienced drivers have been caught out by them. This track breaks many cars. The first chicane catches out even the best of driver. The strangest finish ever remembered at Montreal was when Nigel Mansell was leading, and celebrated a little too soon. He coasted to a halt and stalled the Williams, allowing a very surprised Nelson Piquet to record his last victory for Benetton.

In 2005, the Canadian Grand Prix was the most watched Formula One GP in the world. The race was also the third most watched sporting event on the planet, behind the first place Super Bowl XXXIX and the UEFA Champions League Final.
