Malaysian Grand Prix Info

Malaysian Grand Prix is held at the hyper-modern Sepang International Circuit (SIC)at Sepang, Malaysia. It is situated close to the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport and was widely hailed at the time as the most up to date – if bland – racing complexes in the world.

Malaysian Grand Prix

In the mid 1990s, Malaysia was undergoing a huge change. Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s Prime Minister was determined that by 2020, the country would be a fully industrialised nation. The best way to do this, it was thought, was through the auto trade. The Sepang circuit boasts superb pit garage and media facilities, as well as impressive grandstands and patron amenities.

Designed by Hermann Tilke, Sepang is one of the most technical circuits in Formula One. The combination of long high-speed straights, and tight twisting complexes make the track very complicated, but also perfect for overtaking as the track itself is very wide. The drivers love it and, along with Malaysia’s distinct atmosphere, it makes for an experience unique in Formula One. The main circuit, normally raced in a clockwise direction, is 5.54 kilometres long, and is noted for its sweeping corners and wide straights. The layout is quite unusual, with a very long back straight separated from the pit straight by just one very tight hairpin.

The inaugural event saw the return of Michael Schumacher after his accident at Silverstone some months earlier. The German was in top form upon his return and clearly showed the field that he was back. He led the race with ease before handing the win over to his Ferrari team-mate, Eddie Irvine to help the Irishman with his championship hopes.
